Happy Dapper Day friends! It was lovely to see so many people out for Dapper Day at Hollywood Studios today. So many creative outfits and vintage flair! I kept it classic with red polka dots a la Minnie Mouse.
My dress is a mash-up of McCalls 7789 for the bodice and vintage McCalls 6989 for the skirt. Jess from @EnasBazaar had suggested this pattern and I am so glad she did. The tie front cut-out detail works perfectly for a sundress. I added another tie beneath (inspired by this dress from Kate Spade) to give some dimension at the waistline.
The gathered circle skirt and ruffle at the bottom make for *quite* a twirl. Thankfully, the midi length saved me from having a Marilyn Monroe moment. I swiped this pattern from my mom who has had it since the eighties (and made her own version back then as well!) I definitely see myself making skirt and top set with this in the future.
BODICE PATTERN: McCalls 7789
SKIRT PATTERN: Vintage McCalls 6989, View C
FABRIC: 100% Cotton from Joanns
MODIFICATIONS: One very important thing to note about the bodice – I used the “Cut-Out Front Bodice” pattern pieces and instead of adding the rectangle around the middle I drafted a little tie. I didn’t want the top to accidentally come undone (you never know!!) so having the tie separate helped alleviate that fear. For the waist ties, I drafted longer ties that were sewn into the side seam of the bodice. I measured the width of the main waist bodice pattern piece and figured that would be long enough to meet in the middle and tie together with the other side (if that makes any sense?) If you have questions, just leave a comment and let me know 🙂
DRESS: Made by me!
SHOES: Marc Fisher (old)
SUNNIES: Target (old)
Love vintage style? Check out my other Dapper Day outfits here! I’m already planning for the Fall 2022 outing now and making sure I can attend both days 🙂
